ENTRY 3
Identifying Bias
Item 1:
“Mấy đời bánh
đúc có xương
Mấy đời dì ghẻ lại thương con chồng”
(Ca dao Việt Nam )
-
Prejudice
-
Analysis:
According to this proverb, it is commonly believed that no stepmothers love
their stepchildren. Actually, not all stepmothers ill-treat their husband’s
children and many stepmothers take good care of their stepchildren.
Item 2
-
Discrimination
-
Analysis:
There is a sharp contrast in people’s behaviours to beautiful women and ugly
ones. Women who are ugly in appearance are always abandonded while beautiful
women are always taken care of by other people, especially men.
Item 3
Grandma wouldn’t lie
Little
Johnny was at his first day of school. The teacher advised the class to start
the day with the pledge of allegiance, and instructed them to put their right
hands over their hearts and repeat after him.
He looked around the room as he started the recitation, “I pledge allegiance to the flag…”
He looked around the room as he started the recitation, “I pledge allegiance to the flag…”
When
his eyes fell on Little Johnny, he noticed his hand over the right cheek of his
buttocks.
“Little
Johnny, I will not continue till you put your hand over your heart.”
Little
Johnny replied, “It is over my heart.”
After
several attempts to get Little Johnny to put his hand over his heart, the
teacher asked,
“Why
do you think that is your heart?”
“Because,
every time my Grandma comes to visit, she picks me up, pats me here, and says,
‘Bless your little heart,’ and my Grandma wouldn’t lie.”
-
Assumption
-
Analysis:
Not having much knowlegde about the position of the heart and firmly believing
in what his grandma says, Little Johnny has a mistake for the place of his
heart. He thinks that the right cheek of his buttocks
is his heart but actually, it is just his buttocks.
