ENTRY 3_ TRAN THI LE

Identifying Bias

Item1:

Type of Bias: stereotype

Analysis:
In the text, the writer- Băng Sơn claims that” Phụ nữ Việt Nam vốn đôn hậu, dịu hiền, đoan trang, ý tứ. However, this is not characteristic of all the Vietnamese women and the women living in Hà Nội.The author gives opinion to honor Vietnamese women as well as women living in Ha Noi.

The ad show obvious gender bias. The stereotype of women when the ad appeared was who always stay at home and do “cooking”. Women were always the one who do the cooking and the ad compare wives are like a tool of cooking.

Type of bias: Discrimination

Analyse:
There are two men sitting around a table. The white looks polite and sits in the clean and modern half while the black is untidy and sit in dilapidated one. The black guy looks so shy and miserable, vice versa the fat while man is full of majesty.
Color discrimination can occur between persons of different races or ethnicities, or between persons of the same race or ethnicity. Here, we see clearly the existance of discrimination. Coloured people are behaved in unfavarable way in comparision with the others.

7 nhận xét:

  1. all the three items of your entry are interesting. i find a rather difference in the 2nd item. i think the bias here should be stereotype rather than prejudice. the image doesn't consist a negative judgment/opinion about women. it's only the mental image of them, which society wishes for women.

  3. I think that in the 2nd item the bias here is discrimination not prejudice. There's not a negative judgment or opinion here. The message of this picture is that the duty of women is cooking not men's. the sentence "that's what wives for" means that wives are born to cook to support husbands. So I think it should be discrimination. Besides, pay attension to your spelling unfavourable not unfavarable

  4. Your entry includes 2 kinds of bias but we are obliged to give at least 3. I think the bias of 2nd item is stereotype: cooking is women's responsibilities.

  5. In item 2: I think it is prejudice.
People believe that cooking is only for women in general and for wives in particular. Normally, the Chef will cook because it is his/ her main work. However, in this picture, the Chef is a man and he does everything but cook. He says that cooking is only for wives. It is obvious that it is negative judgment to women. Cooking is not only for women, it is also for men in modern society when women and men are equal.

  6. I think that item 2 is stereotype bias not discrimination because "..cook- that's wife for" means people always think that cook is a women's chore

  7. From my point of view, I don't think that your analysis is enough to prove the item a kind of stereotype. You should add "this mental image of men and women are not true in all curcumctances"
