IDENTIFY BIAS
Item 1:
On October 17th,
2012, during the second presidential debate with the present US President Barack Obama, in response to a question about
what the candidates would do to address gender inequality in the workplace,
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said that when he was governor
and looking to fill his cabinet, women's groups brought him "whole binders full of women."
A more complete excerpt of Romney's answer:
CROWLEY:
Governor Romney, pay equality for women?
ROMNEY: Thank
you. And important topic and one which I learned a great deal about,
particularly as I was serving as governor of my state, because I had the chance
to pull together a cabinet and all the applicants seemed to be men.
And I -- and I went to my staff, and I said, "How come
all the people for these jobs are -- are all men." They said, "Well,
these are the people that have the qualifications." And I said,
"Well, gosh, can't we -- can't we find some -- some women that are also
qualified?"
ROMNEY: And -- and so we -- we took a concerted effort to go
out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become
members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women's groups and said,
"Can you help us find folks," and they brought us whole binders full
of women.
The unusual phrase was immediately seized upon by critics and
quickly became one of the most discussed topics on Twitter and most searched
for terms on Google.
-
Discrimination
- Analysis: Because of blundering out the unusual
phrase "binders of women", Mr. Mitt Romney expresses the discrimination
with women in working. He mentions women in less favorable way. Thus, Mitt Romney's argument is an act of discrimination.
Item 2: OMO ADVERTISEMENT
- Stereotype
- Analysis: In this advertisement, a woman appears
as woman of family. She is always busy with full of housework such as cooking, cleaning
house, taking care of children and washing clothes. She does all work by herself
without any help from others. The advertisement builds the image of women as a modal
mother and a wife in a family who meets the husband's demand. This is a outlook of stereotype because many modern women not only take care
of family but also succeed in the society.
Item 3:
In the 1920s, American society was changing rapidly and doing
so in some ways (flappers, etc) that some Americans were uncomfortable
with. So they had two choices. They could find someone else to blame or they
could admit that regular Americans were choosing to behave in these ways. So the asserted the innocence of regular
Americans and argued that it was immigrants who were causing the
problems. They implemented Prohibition and immigration restriction as ways of
showing this attitude.
- Scapegoating
- Analysis: Holding immigrants responsible for the change of
American society. Immigrants are blamed for the cause of the problem in community.

After reading your entry, I have some comments for you:
Trả lờiXóaIn item 3: In my opinion, you should analyze more deeply. Immigrants in American were blamed for the cause of the rapid change in the 1920s. Obviously, they weren’t causing the problem. holding immigrants responsible for community's problems-changes of American Society, it is scapegoating.
My dear,
Trả lờiXóaPlease fix some minor mistakes.
