Identifying bias
Item 1: (1)
A
Sign at the Greyhound Bus Station
|
- Analysis: The sign saying’ Colored Waiting Room’ is used with the aim that such place is for ‘colored people’ only. They are treated unequally and, of course become the victims of this racial discrimination. In fact, it will make no difference if the name of this cinema stop is ‘waiting room’. ‘Colored people’ are understood as the African American people who are treated with contempt and totally separated from American’s society.
- Discrimination
Item 2: (2)
- Analysis: Men are usually thought to be strong and muscular. In fact, there are not always men who are the same in the photo. It is just a common concept of men
- Stereotype
Item 3: (3)
“One tongue is enough for a woman”
- Normally, tongue (noun) = large, movable fleshy part in the mouth that we use for talking and tasting. However, in this case, "tongue" is used in the sense of "language". The proverb is against women who learn too much. The message here is women should not learn too much.
- Prejudice

item 2: i think that the picture is not clear that it is Stereotype. May be he shows his muscular??
Trả lờiXóaItem 2 is similar to the example in the textbook. I think you'd better find something new
Trả lờiXóaI do not agree with Thuy's comment. I think the type of bias in item 2 is stereotype. That picture shows a strong and muscular man. It implied all men are like that. But in reality, it is not true for all men=> stereotype. In my opinion, all your item is ok.
