ENTRY 3
Identifying Bias
- Stereotype
- Analysis: The image shows noticeable characteristics of people who are always interested in Maths only. They tends to be dry, unattractive and old-fashioned. However, not all of them possess these features, just most of them do.
- Discrimination
- Analysis: Nam Dinh Province declines to employ candidates who graduate from private universities or getting degree when already having a job. It is unfair because not all graduates from state owned universities do better than any one from private universities Besides, many people cannot afford to enter university immediately after leaving high school so they start finding a job first and study while working. Those determined people and praiseworthy for their effort and elligble enough to be good officials.
- Discrimination
- Analysis: this is a real jean badge in an US local store. The badge shows that instead of following all the complicated instructions, a customer (in this case, assumed to be a male), can just simply give the jean to his wife because “it’s her job”. In this way, the badge reflects the manufacturer’s prejudice that house chores, especially doing laundry, are women’s jobs.
ITEM 4:
Article: “There’s no logical reason to allow gay marriage”
- Prejudice.
- Analysis: In the article, the author Tom Kenyon, bases on his limited prejudice, as well as conventional idea, that (start quote) “marriage has been as much about the provision of a future for a society (through children) as it has been about the relationship between a man and a woman” (End quote.) Therefore, he does not consider. Therefore he considers gay marriage is not suit for the historical/cultural idea of marriage. Also, the title offers discussion about gay marriage’s unsuitability in LOGICAL reason. However, the article reflects little logical sites of the issue, instead personal and common opinions about marriage itself.
In item 1, I think the bias type is prejudice. All the adjectives describing those people are negative.
Trả lờiXóaIn item 4, the bias type should be discrimination. The author has prejudice about gay marriage. Therefore, he writes an article to oppose it.
In Item 1: I think the bias is prejudice, because the characteristics are negative. The image shows noticeable characteristics of people who are interested in natural sciences, not only in Maths, because you can see the man is taking test-tubes,which are typical for chemistry science.
Trả lờiXóain item 3: i think the bias type is Prejudice, not discrimination because people usually think that house chores, especially doing laundry, are women’s jobs.
Trả lờiXóain item 4: i agree with My Hanh that the bias type is discrimination.

Trả lờiXóaDear Phuong,
Trả lờiXóaI have some comments for item 2:
I think your analysis is not really clearly. I have the same idea as you that the type of bias there is discrimination but you should show what detail prejudice and prejudice in action is. Furthermore, I do not what do you mean in this sentence:" Those determined people and praiseworthy for their effort and elligble enough to be good officials".
I agree with Hanh's comment: type of bias item 1 prejudice.
