Entry 3
Identifying Bias
Item 1
- Stereotype
- Analysis: This is the printed advertisement of a dishwasher machine. In picture, there is a family with husband, wife and their daughter. The husband gives his wife a dishwasher machine on the occasion of mother's day. The woman's face expresses gratefulness, while the husband seems to be proud of what he did. The product is also advertised as a sparkling idea for husband to roll dishpan drudgery out of his wife's life. With the things shown in picture and the general selling proposition of the product, the woman is stereotyped to be the certain person who must do dish-washing in family.
Item 2
- Assumption
- Analysis: This is the broadcast advertisement of the P/H herbal cough medicine. The word "MÀ" (but) in saying at the end of TVC "Thuốc ho P/H, thuốc nam MÀ hiệu quả" (roughly translated: Although P/H is a kind of herbal medicine, it is effective in disease treatment) assumes that herbal medicines in general are not effective. It is an absolutely inexact conclusion based on limited knowledge of the facts.
Item 3
- Discrimination
- Analysis: It is a board in a buffet restaurant in Thailand. It is quite clear that this warning board aims at Vietnamese customers because it is written in Vietnamese only. So, there is a prejudice that the Vietnamese in general is considered greedy in eating buffet. This board is the action of the above prejudice. The board makes all Vietnamese customers uncomfortable and ashamed whether they are greedy or not.
In item 2, I think it is prejudice bias not assumption because people give a negative judgment about Vietnamese medicine. They think that the abroad medicine is better than the inner one.
Trả lờiXóai think that "Nam" in the sentence ".....thuoc Nam ma hieu qua" doesn't mean that it's my country.....but i agree with Ngoc the bias is prejudice
