                                                                 Entry 1

                                                   Item 1: picture [1]

Rhetorical devices:
·        Metonymy: piece of ice – the people, the Titanic, the biggest ship at its time that seemed to  be unsinkable  – the people’s dream
Message: if you can dream it, you can achieve it. People can surely make dreams come true if they dare to dream right now and try best to succeed.

                                                  Item 2: story [2]
The donkey in a well

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up any way, it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the ell and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Rhetorical devices:
·        Metaphor: the donkey – each of us, dirt – difficulties in daily life
Message:
Life is full of difficulties. We can only get over them by not stopping, never giving up

For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

  1. My dear!
Your entry is quite interesting but I disagree with you in several things:
    - Item 1:
+ Metaphor: piece of ice: people who have dreams
Titanic: big ship = difficulties in life
    Iceberg: people who won difficulties
+ Message: In life, people have their own dreams. It is neccessary for them try their best and make the dream come true.

    - Item 2:
+ Metaphor: The donkey: people in difficul situatios
    The well, the sand: difficulties
+ Message: We can find the solutions in difficul situations

  2. I see things rather differently myself in
    - Item 4: I think carrots and their leaves don't mean success. I suppose they are metaphor for internal characteristic and external characteristic, respectively.
    Rhetorical devices: metaphor, irony, overstatement
Message: In our life, sometimes the internal characteristic and external characteristic are not the same.

  4. Thanks for your comments, Trần Hồng Ngọc
    - Item 1:
I see what you mean. However, I want to emphasise the message here firstly is that the people dare to dream. Does the Titanic refer you to something? You should know that Titanic was the biggest ship at its time and it was believed to be unsinkable. So, it is symbolic of the highest dream that hardly come true. The ice does dare to dream. It practices weight-lifting seriously and its dream to sink the Titanic does come true. So I personally think the message of this picture is that.

  5. Thanks so much Võ Phương Linh,
I agree with you in terms of Rhetorical devices in this picture. However, I still keep my point of view. You know it is surely that internal characteristic and external characteristic are not the same. For example, the person with bigger nose does not mean that his nose works better than the one having a smaller one. Therefore, the carrots should refer to success because the final wanted part of the tree is its root – the carrot.

  6. I think the message of item 4 is that: Don't evaluate something/somebody only through appearance.

  7. I would like to add more to message: the beauty, the qualities of sth/sb are inside.

  8. I find it very interesting to read the poem "Dreams" in item 3. I would like to contribute my ideas for it. I think the repetition is
" Hold fast to dreams". In addition, some rhetorical devices should be added such as metaphor, parallelism.
    - Metaphor: broken-winged - useless, barren field - emptiness
    - Parallelism: the poems has two parts which are similar in syntactic.
The message I would give is "Hold fast to dreams before it no longer exists.
