Item 1: Cartoon
![](file:///C:/Users/TRANTH~1/AppData/Local/Temp/msohtmlclip1/01/clip_image002.jpg)
Rhetorical
devices:
+ Overstatement, irony
+ Metaphor: 2 opponents ( 2 levels of
society: labour and capital)
+ Metonymy: the car and the cart
(position and power)
Message:
The disparity in rich-poor causes contradictions
between levels of society
Item 2: Poem
The Lonely Soul
The lonely soul wanders
Alone in the walks of life
No other soul as his companion
The lonely soul wanders
Alone in the daybreak
He does his duties
In the walks of life
The lonely soul wanders
Alone in the life
He meets many other souls
Who comes to be
Unfit for the lonely soul
The lonely soul wanders
As the days pass by
The lonely soul became
More lonely, with no other
souls as his companion
The lonely soul wanders
Alone in the walks of life
The lonely soul decides
Not to die, but to face
Life in all its hardships
The lonely soul wanders
By: Marilee Morley
Rhetorical
devices:
+ Repetition :The lonely soul wanders; soul as his companion
+ Metaphor: The lonely soul (person who is disappoited, meet
with serious difficulties)

Message:
In the life, there are serious
difficulties made people stumble and fall. Other people’s sympathy is motive
power to overcome those difficulties
Item 3: Fable
The Ant and the
Grasshopper
In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was
hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing
along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
"Why not come and
chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling
in that way?"
"I am helping to
lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do
the same."
"Why bother about
winter?" said the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at
present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.
When the winter came
the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger - while it saw the
ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected
in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for days of
need.
Rhetorical
devices:
+ Metaphor: Ant (person who is hard
working, prepare for the future well), Grasshopper (person who indulges in
pleasures to work, does not care for future), summer (present), winter
(future), corn and grain (products, knowledge)
Message:
Hard working is important for
success
I think the message of the item 2 is that there are a lot of difficulties in our life, so we have to make efforts to overcome ourselves because nobody can help us than ourselves
Trả lờiXóaI totally agree with you about your analysys of item3. However, I add the more rhetorical device : symbol. Because "ant" always symbols the hard word
Trả lờiXóaI think Rhyme is also one of the rhetorical devices in item 3, namely "chirping_sing, toiling_moiling, to_do, bother_winter.
Trả lờiXóaThank Ung! Now, I realized more a rhetorical device and I will add it in my entry
XóaNhận xét này đã bị tác giả xóa.
Trả lờiXóaI think the message of the item 3 is that:" we should prepare the best things for the future"
XóaIn Item 2, I think there are some interesting rhetorical devices you should notice:
Trả lờiXóa* Assonance: lonely - soul
*Rhyme: The lonely soul ...
Alone in ...
In my opinion, the message in item 3 should be " Good preparation helps us to stand steady in our changing life."
Trả lờiXóaHi Hiet! I would like to contribute to your entry:
Trả lờiXóa1. Item 1:
-Rhetorical devices:
+ You should tell where irony is. Irony: The image of the rich contrast to the poor’s clearly. They are on the same race but each class use different means of transport. The rich use car which is fast while the poor use slow cart. Therefore, the difference is too large.
+Metaphor: I just think people in your picture are only the rich and the poor:
People in car = the rich
People in cart= the poor
-Message: I suggest: In society, there is such a big gap between the rich and the poor that poor people never keep up with rich people.
2. Item 2: I partly agree with you; however, I would like to add my comment:
-Rhetorical devices:
+Repetition: The lonely soul wanders, Alone in the…, soul as his companion.
+Assonance: His-companion, in-its-hardship.
+Rhyme: wander-duties-souls-decides-hardships.
-Message: Life is full of challenge and loneliness; however, people should try their best to overcome them instead of avoiding.
I think you should show rhetorical devices in the first item more clearly, what overstatement is and what irony is.
Trả lờiXóaIn my opinion, it is ridiculous to have the race between car and ox cart. Besides, a slim student has knowledge and degree, but he do a very hard work. While, a fat man on the car's face seems stupid, but quite relax. He is allowed to go forward before the student do. The mesage need be that sometimes learning is still in contradiction with ocial position in a society.
