Entry 1 _ Mai Thị Huế

Entry 1 _ Mai Thị Huế
 Item 1 : Poem

She Walks in Beauty
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent !
Rhetorical  devices :
Alliteration : cloudless climes; starry skies, day denies, which waves, serenely sweet; So soft, so; Heart Whose
Simile : comparing the movement of a beautiful woman with the movement of skies

Item 3 : Story

The important things in life
A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

 Rhetorical divices :
Metaphor:  pebbles - your job, your house, your car, The sand - small stuff, The rocks - your family, your partner, your health, your children, the jar - your life.
Repetition : he asks the same questions three times .
Message : identifying the really important parts of your life and treasuring them.

  3. I agree with Q.Trang that your item 2 should add the overstatement because people and animal can't talk with each other. Besides, you shoul give rhetorical devices and explain them more detai.
for example: -irony: attitude of human being in protection the environment.
-overstatement: people and animal can't talk to each other
-metaphor:the man( human being );the polar bear( all animals )

  4. From my point of view, you should add one more rhetorical devices to item 1: Rhyme.
    For example: night-climes-skies-bright-eyes-light-denies; less-tress-express; grace-face-place; brow-glow.
One more thing in this item, is your message a message? It is just a noun phrase. A message must be a full sentence.

  5. Itemn 2: I agree with Diu on metaphor.
    - overstatement: the ice is melting between them.
    - irony: the man tells the polar bears that they are in danger but he doesn't expect them to say that he is in the same situation

  6. I think you should show in what way metorphor is used.
