ENTRY 4
Analyzing arguments
Item 1:
Analysis:
If you use PANTENE PRO-V, you will have thick and strong hair (If A, then B)
If you don't use PANTENE PRO-V (not A)
Therefore, you will not have thick and strong hair (not B)
=> Structural fallacy
Item 2:
Analysis:
You either love the country or leave it
You don't love the country
You must leave the country
=> Content fallacy: False dilemma
The picture offers only two choices: love the country or leave it. However, there are many choices such as : - leave it for reasons but still love it
- don't love but don't hate
- don't love but still live in it
Item 3:
Smith, who
is from England, decides to attend graduate school at Ohio State
University. He has never been to the US before. The day after he
arrives, he is walking back from an orientation session and sees two
white (albino) squirrels chasing each other around a tree. In his next
letter home, he tells his family that American squirrels are white.
Analysis:
Two
white (albino) squirrels chasing each other around a tree
All the American squirrels are alike
American squirrels are white.
=> Fallacy of presumption: hasty
generalization
Smith has a conclusion about the American squirrels based on two white squirrels. However, two squirrels are not enough to present the whole population of American squirrels. This is a very small sample is taken from the whole population of American squirrels.

in item 3: I think you should shorten the story because the first part of it is not necessary, not relevant to the rest. besides, you use the wrong word "present" in the sentence "However, two squirrels are not enough to present the whole population of American squirrels.". it must be "represent"
Trả lờiXóato my viewpoint,
Trả lờiXóa-In item 1, you should explain and why it is sructural fallacy more clearly and what fallacy type is.
Here it is denying the antecedent. It is better if you correct it:
If A, then B
Not B
______________
therefore, not A.
