Entry 4_ Dương Nguyên Xuân

Item 1

(A motto by Flora Gray: “use this as your motto - put this print in a very prominent location in your home..... whatever you do, if you love something ....BUY IT NOW OR REGRET IT LATER”)

Analysis

Buy it now or regret it later
ð     False dilemma (Fallacy of presumption): the customers not only have 2 choices which are buying it now or regretting it later. For example, they may feel no regret at all of not buying the item, they may feel regret of buying it or they may chose to buy other similar product.

Item 2

Analysis

If you use Ephydrot, you can get rid of foot odor (If A, then B)
You do not use Ephydrot                                       (Not A)
You can not get rid of foot odor.                           (Therefore not B)

ð     invalid (denying the antecedent)
ð     structural fallacy

Valid argument:
If you use Ephydrot, you can get rid of food odor (If A, then B)
You can not get rid of foot odor                               (not B)
                            _______________________________________________________
You do not use Ephydrot.                                       (Therefore not A)

Item 3

There’s no logical reason to allow gay marriage

[…]
Our definition of marriage as between a man and a woman is part of our cultural heritage as well as recognition of the uniqueness of the relationship. There’s no reason to change that.

 Analysis:

ð      Irrelevant appeal (fallacy of relevance): appealing to tradition, culture to argue that gay marriage should not be allow

1 nhận xét:

  1. I have some comment for your entry
    - In item 2: the argument in advertisement is invalid and you needn’t rewrite the valid argument. However, writing it is still ok.
    - IN item 3: you should have conclusion that obviously, it is a weak argument when he appeal to tradition to support his opinion.
