entry 4_ ĐÀM THỊ THU THẢO

                                                 ANALYZING ARGUMENTS

Item1: FALLACY OF PRESUMPTION
You should never gamble. Once you start gambling you find it hard to stop. Soon you are spending all your money on gambling, and eventually you will turn to crime to support your earnings.

Analysis:

Once you start gampling

                          hidden premise: you will be lured to gambling

You find hard to stop

                          hidden premise: you need lots of money

you spending all money on gambling

                         hidden premise: you are in lack of money.

you will turn to crime to support your earnings

=> You should never gamble

 Fallacy of  slippery slope (insufficient premises leading to false premises)

Item 2: FALLACY OF PRESUMPTION

Analysis:
The picture shows only 2 choices between corn dogs and death. It means that if you don’t eat corn dog, you will die. As you can see, there are many kinds of food for us to eat, not just only corn dogs.

=>   False dilemma

Item 3: STRUCTURAL FALLACY

“…She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses,” cried the young Student, “but in all my garden there is no red rose…”
Source: Oscar Wilde, the Nightingale and the Rose, 1888

Analysis:
If I brought her red roses, she would dance with me

 I couldn't bring her red roses (because these is no red rose in the garden)
________________________________________________________
She won’t dance with me

False structure: Denying the antecedent
  If A, then B
                          Not A
                          ______________

                          Therefore, not B

True structure: Indirect way of reasoning:
                           If A, then B
                           Not B
                           ______________

                           Therefore, not A

 => Structural fallacy
