Entry 4:

Argument Structures and Fallacies

 [Item 1] Structural Fallacy

-Description: It is a poster to advertise a night club called Клуб Up&Down  in Moscow, Russia. In the poster, there is an elegant man and an attractive woman with the slogan “No money, no honey”
->Message: If you have money, you can go Up and Down club to find your honey.

-Type: Structural Fallacy.

- Structure of Argument
(Denying the antecedent)
Premise 1: If you don’t have money, then you can’t go to Up and Down club to have honey.
Premise 2: You have money
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion: Therefore, you can go to Up and Down club to have honey.

If A then B
Not A
--------------------------
Therefore Not B

The above argument is invalid. In fact, you may still have your own honey without having money to go this night club.

 [Item 2] Content Fallacy

There is a saying of the insurance company called Mutual like this:
“It was an easy choice, I either went with Mutual or I went with pain.”

-Type of Fallacy: Fallacy of presumption (False dilemma).

-Structure of Argument:
Either did I go with Mutual or I go with pain
I didn't go with Mutual
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I went with pain.

-Analysis: The saying gives a choice between using Mutual and being painful. It means a choice between Mutual’s policies and terrible outcomes without using it. However, there are more choices which could be made. You still might be painful while you don’t use this insurance like diseases, accidents.

[Item 3] Content Fallacy

-Type of Fallacy: Fallacy of presumption (Post-hoc Fallacy).

- Structure of Argument
The girl ate oranges and she is ill now.
The action that she ate oranges preceded her illness.
The preceding action is the cause of the following one.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eating oranges makes her ill.

-Analysis: The charlatan doctor in the above story concludes that the disease of the girl is from eating oranges when he sees their rinds. It might not true because 2 actions above might happen accidentally and there are other reasons causing her illness.

Entry 4: Argument Structures and Fallacies

Item 1 [1]

John and Bill are discussing the possibility of a strike at their factory. John says, "I'm certain that Jim Powers will join the strikers." Bill wonders how he can be so sure that Powers, a thirty-year employee and a foreman respected by both labor and management, will go on strike.
John explains: "In the past twenty-five years, there have been several strikes at the factory, some before it become a union shop. In each strike, all union members went on strike. Jim Powers, though a friend of management, is a union member. Thus, union members will strike and Jim Powers will strike with the others."

All union members will strike (All S are P)
Jim Powers is a union member (a is S)
__________________________________________
Therefore, Jim Powers will strike. (therefore, a is P)
=> valid argument HOWEVER it is unsound because one of the premises "all union members will strike" is not correct, in other words, its truth value is not reliable.
This argument should be revised as follows:
Almost all union members will strike
Jim Powers is a union member
__________________________________________
Therefore, Jim Powers will properly strike.

Item 2 [2]

"Everyone I've met this morning is going to vote for the incumbent. The incumbent is going to win."
"How many people did you meet?"
"Three"
à Content fallacies (Hasty generalization)
Because the conclusion based on too few people.

Item 3 [3]

"Now, only two things can be done with the savings and loan places. You either shut them down now or let them go bankrupt."
à Fallacies of presumption (false dilemma)
There are some solutions else such as paying in instalments, leaving something as security and assigning property.

ENTRY 4
Argument Structures and Fallacies
ITEM 1.
“Nhớ câu kiến nghĩa bất vi
Làm người thế ấy cũng phi anh hùng”
(Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, Truyện Lục Vân Tiên)

Analysis:
v    Argument structure:

Hidden premise:   Người thấy việc nghĩa mà làm là anh hùng
Premise:               Người thấy việc nghĩa không làm
Conclusion:                    Không phải là người anh hùng
ð    The argument is valid but unsound.

v    Fallacy type: denying the antecedent (structural fallacies)
If A, then B
Not A
Therefore, not B

ITEM 2:

Conclusion:                    Đùi ếch to không ngon
ð    The argument is valid but unsound.

v     Fallacy type: hasty generalization. The writer concludes that all frog thighs are tasteless when he only ate some frog thighs at a restaurant. The conclusion is made based on a small sample.

ITEM 3:
“The attendant evils of gambling are many. A man loses his money to others. He becomes a debtor and is ruined. The gambling maniac can lead to other evils like thefts, fraud and even in some casers murder. The family of a habitual gambler cannot be happy because they cannot say what would happen if the maniac loses all his money. A gambler is not at all dependable and hence society always shuns him.”
( All forms of gambling should be bolished, 200 English essays, Thong Ke publishing house)

Analysis:
v    Argument structure:
A man who gambles will lose his money to others
                               ↓
He become a debtor and is ruined
                                ↓
He will commit thefts, fraud and even murder.
                                          ↓
The gambler’s family cannot be happy

v    Fallacy type: slippery slope. Often, it leaves out a number of steps between the two events, without saying why they will simply be bypassed, does not explain how the first event leads to the other. There are many hidden premises in the argument.

Entry 4
Argument structures and fallacies
Item 1:
Henry went to the football game, and then he had a car accident. Therefore, the football game caused his car accident.

=> post-hoc fallacy

Henry went to the football game and he had a car accident
The action that Henry went to the football preceded his car accident
The preceding action is the cause of the following one
----------------------------------------------------------------
The football game caused his car accident

(False premises)

The event “Henry went to the football game” precedes “he had a car accident”. The conclusion that the football games caused his car accident is false. The two events may have happened in that order but the first action was not responsible for the second.
Item 2:

What fits your busy schedule better, exercising one hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day?
ð     Fallacy of False Dilemma
Either he exercises one hour a day or he is dead 24 hours a day
He does not exercise one hour a day
--------------------------------------------------------
He is dead 24 hours a day

In the picture, it is doctor’s advice to patient. The doctor tells that either he exercises one hour a day or he is dead 24 hours a day. It means he only chooses one of tow choices. However, there are some other options to patients and the doctor does not mention here. For example, he does not take exercise everyday but he takes a special diet to keep healthy.
Item 3:
I asked six of my friends what they thought of the new spending restraints and they agreed it is a good idea. The new restraints are therefore generally popular.

ð     Fallacy of hasty generalization

Six of his friends thought the new spending restraints is a good idea
Most other people like six of his friends
People often do or carry out the good ideas
---------------------------------------------------------
The new restraints are therefore generally popular

False premises
Six of his friends are a small number and it can not represent the whole community. Therefore, the new restraints can not become popular if he only rely on thoughts of six of his friends.

Entry 4: Analyzing Arguments

Item 1:

Analysis: Content fallacies
Basing on a limited number of people who she knows, the author has led the considerations that: “ Tất cả những người cầm tinh con Rồng mà tôi từng biết thì không một ai là thành đạt trong công việc, may mắn hay giàu sang cả, đa số đều lận đận” and “Mỗi khi họp lớp tôi nhận thấy những người tuổi Rắn đa số rất may mắn và thành đạt, có người rất giàu là đằng khác, còn những ai tuổi Rồng (học cùng khoá) thì chả mấy ai thành công trong sự nghiệp cả”. Afterward, she concluded that “ai mang tuổi Rồng rất lận đận và thường không giàu sang bằng người khác”. In fact, she made a wrong conclusion because not everyone born in years of dragon is hard to succeed and not as rich as others.
-->  Fallacy of presumption: Hasty generalization

Item 2:

Story: So what kind of biker are you?

A biker went to a bar and ordered a drink. As he sat sipping his whiskey, a young lady sat down next to him. She turned to the biker and asked, "are you a real biker?".
He replied, "Well, I've spent my whole life on Harleys. My momma was pregnant with me when she rode on the back of my Daddy's Harley, then as a little boy I rode on the back with my Daddy until I finally got my own Harley. I've been riding a Harley ever since. So yes, I guess I am a real biker."
She said, "I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women, when I shower, watch TV, eat, whatever, everything seems to make me think of women. "
Then she got up and left.
The biker was thinking about what just happened when a man sat down next to the biker and asked, "Are you a real biker?"
He replied, "I always thought I was a real biker, but I just found out I'm a lesbian."
Analysis: Structural fallacies
The argument of the biker:
Premise 1: All lesbians think about women all day
Premise 2: The biker thinks about women all day
Conclusion: The biker is a lesbian
The above argument has form like this:
All S are P
a is P
Therefore, a is S
--> Arguing backwards with All

Item 3:

“[...] Tạo hoá đã tạo ra cho người phụ nữ đặc quyền thiêng liêng đó là làm mẹ. Và bất cứ ai làm mẹ cũng tự hào về điều đó. Tuy nhiên, việc chưa chồng đã khoe con đang bùng nổ trong giới nghệ sĩ Việt đáng báo động. Điều này đang đi ngược lại với thuần phong mỹ tục của người Việt và là điều đáng cảnh báo với giới trẻ khi nhìn vào những thần tượng của mình. [...]” (Chichi)

Analysis: Content Fallacies
Traditionally, it is unacceptable for a Vietnamese woman to give birth before getting married.  The author has used this belief to criticize the Vietnamese female artists that doesn’t follow this tradition.
--> Fallacies of relevance: Irrelevant appeals -> appeal to traditions

ENTRY 4:
ARGUMENT STRUCTURE AND FALLACIES

ITEM 1:
"Harold maintains that the legal age for drinking beer should be 18 instead of 21. But we all know that Harold is 19 years old and would like to drink legally. Therefore, the legal age for drinking beer should be 21 instead of 18."
Analysis:
- Premise: Harold maintains that the legal age for drinking beer should be 18 instead of 21
- Premise: Harold is 19 years old and would like to drink legally
- Conclusion: The legal age for drinking beer should be 21 instead of 18
 => Personal attack
Explanation: Harold is 19 years old (more than 18 and less than 21) and would like to drink legally. It doesn't mean that Harold has no right to maintain his opinion about the legal age for drinking beer.

ITEM 2:
My father smoked four packs of cigarettes a day since age fourteen, and lived until age sixty-nine.  Therefore, smoking really can’t be that bad for you.
Analysis:
- Premise: My father smoked four packs of cigarettes a day since age fourteen
- Premise: My father lived until age sixty-nine
- Conclusion: Smoking really can’t be that bad for you

=> Hasty generalization.
Explanation: We cannot draw a universal conclusion about the health risks of smoking by the case study of one man.

ITEM 3
…I want to list seventeen summary statements which, if true, provide abundant reason why the reader should reject evolution and accept special creation as his basic world-view. …
"Belief in evolution is a necessary component of atheism, pantheism, and all other systems that reject the sovereign authority of an omnipotent personal God."
(Henry M. Morris, The Remarkable Birth of Planet Earth, Creation-Life Publishers, 1972, pp. vi-vii.)
Analysis:
- Premise: Belief in evolution is a necessary component of atheism, pantheism and all other systems
( If atheism/pantheism is true then evolution is true: If A then B)
- Premise: Atheism, pantheism, and all other systems reject the sovereign authority of an omnipotent personal God
( Atheism/pantheism is false : not A)
- Conclusion: Evolution should be rejected.
(Therefore, evolution is false: therefore not B)
=> Structure fallacy: Denying the antecedent

Argument Structures and Fallacies

Item 1

Source: http://www.coloribus.com/adsarchive/prints/people-for-the-ethical-treatment-of-animals-peta-i-am-alicia-silverstone-and-im-a-vegetarian-10455255/

Analysis
Argument:
If you go vegetarian, you will become beautiful, slim and sexy (If A, then B)
You don't go vegan                                                                (Not A)
You won't be beautiful, slim and sexy                                     (Therefore, not B)
=> Invalid (denying the antecedent): you may still become beautiful, slim and sexy by eating diet and doing exercise, for example.
=> Structural fallacy
Valid argument:
If you go vegetarian, you will become beautiful, slim and sexy (If A, then B)
You don't become beautiful, slim and sexy                             (Not B)
You may don't go vegetarian                                                 (Therefore, not A)

Item 2

Analysis
Argument: "Anti-God is Anti-American"
=> Most American are Christian. So if you are Anti-God, you are Anti-American.
=> Irrelevant appeal (appeal to popularity)

Argument: "Anti-American is Treason
                       Traitors lead to Civil War"
=> Treason/traitors is only a necessary but insufficient condition to lead to Civil War. If there is the condition of treason only, it is impossible to conclude that Civil War will happen.
=> Necessary and sufficient conditions (Fallacies of presumption)

Item 3

"I wish President Obama had succeeded, because I want America to succeed.  (APPLAUSE). But his promises gave way to disappointment and division. This isn't something we have to accept.  Now is the moment when we can do something.  And with your help, we will do something." (Mitt Romney's speech, in which he accepts the GOP presidential nomination, at the Republican National Convention on Aug. 30, 2012. )

Analysis
Through his speech, Romney is trying to claim a argument that either you vote for me, or you will have the same disappointment and division you had under Obama. However, we can see that America may have other brighter destinies under Obama, not only disappointment and division.
=> False dilemma
